Canada is Working to Make “Hate Speech” Punishable by a Fine of $16,000
While everyone watched in horror as vandals burned down several churches throughout Canada, last month the Canadian government announced a plan to make “hate speech” subject to a fine of $16,000.
In a plan unveiled on June 23, 2021, the first hate speech offense would be punishable by a maximum fine of $20,000 ($16,250 USD) and the second offense would come with a $50,000 ($40,600 USD). Under this legislative proposal, social media users who violate the law would be punished, but social media companies who allow these users to make posts would be exempt from such fines.
According to Gizmodo, this new development came “after a 20-year-old man recently rammed his truck into a family of five in Ontario, killing everyone but a 9-year-old, in what Canadian police say was an anti-Muslim terror attack.”
Canada’s Attorney General David Lametti claimed that this law would not single out “simple expressions of dislike or disdain” during a virtual press conference on June 23.
Lametti attempted to re-assure skeptics that Canada’s law is only focused on punishing extreme acts of “hatred” that “expresses detestation or vilification of a person or group on the basis of a prohibited ground of discrimination.”
“Hate speech directly contradicts the values underlying freedom of expression and our Charter of Rights,” Lametti declared. “It threatens the safety and well-being of its targets. It silences and intimidates, especially when the target is a vulnerable person or community. When hate speech spreads, its victims lose their freedom to participate in civil society online.”
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s government issued a statement on June 4 detailing the goals of the legislation, Bill C-36, in addition to other measures being implemented to combat “racial abuse” online :
“Amend the Canadian Human Rights Act to define a new discriminatory practice of communicating hate speech online, and to provide individuals with additional remedies to address hate speech;
add a definition of “hatred” to section 319 of the Criminal Code based on Supreme Court of Canada decisions; and
create a new peace bond in the Criminal Code designed to prevent hate propaganda offences and hate crimes from being committed, and make related amendments to the Youth Criminal Justice Act.”
Canada is going through some rough times as far as its culturally ascendant leftism goes. In its present form, Canada would make free speech titans like Voltaire, if he were still alive, shriek due to its disrespect for the freedom of speech. These days the Great White North is in constant competition with the United Kingdom as the most oppressive, politically correct country in the Anglosphere.
The worst part is that Canada has no credible right-wing party or movement to resist this insanity.
